Good Morning Vietnam

Reel Mountain Theatre
Reel Mountain Theatre
Free admission at Reel Mountain Theater, located in the Stanley Village shopping center. Just show your Library Card at the ticket counter.

Presented as part of the One Book One Valley series for January 2022, as we read and discuss the book, The Mountains Sing.

Larimer County requires masks in all public buildings due to overcapacity conditions in our local hospitals. Thank you for following this public health order. Find out more information directly from Larimer County Department of  Health and Environment HERE.

Rated R. Running time: 2 hours.

Overview:

The film begins in 1965, when disc jockey Adrian Cronauer (Robin Williams) is assigned to take over the AFR's Saigon radio broadcasts. In contrast to the dull, by-rote announcers that have preceded him, Cronauer is a bundle of dynamite, heralding each broadcast with a loud "Goooooood morning, Vietnaaaaam," playing whatever records tickle his fancy (even those not officially sanctioned by his hidebound superiors), and indulging in wild flights of improvisational fancy. Cronauer's immediate superior Lt. Hauk (Bruno Kirby), whose own notions of humor are puerile and pathetic, jealously attempts to dethrone Vietnam's favorite rock jock. Fortunately, Cronauer's popularity is such that he enjoys the full protection of the higher-ups. But when Cronauer, after experiencing the horrors of war first-hand, insists upon telling his listeners the truth instead of the official government line, he is instantly replaced by the unfunny Hauk and must struggle to get back on the air.

The American Dream: Living Room Conversations

11:30 AM - 1:00 PM
ZOOM

The American Dream. Since early in America’s history, the American dream has represented the belief that anyone in this country, including immigrants, could make it if they worked hard enough. Some people believe this has always been an illusion, while others point to it as a legitimate heritage of our country. Similar differences in perspective exist today: Is the American Dream alive and well or do the realities of today’s American economy and socio-political structure hamper certain groups of people so they cannot achieve what others might? What do you find inspiring about your personal American dream?

Living Room Conversations is a small group model for dialogue that facilitates connections between people. Come to the table to share your perspective, learn about the experiences of others and potentially leave with stronger connections and a shared sense of community. This interactive program is participatory in nature: attendees will be asked to engage with and contribute to the conversation. Optional: prepare ahead of time with the The American Dream Conversation Guide

This program is offered in collaboration with Estes Valley Restorative Justice Partnership as part of our Estes Valley Community Conversations program.

Presented as part of the One Book One Valley series for January 2022, as we read and discuss the book, The Mountains Sing.
