Getting Published with Deborah Bouziden (In-Person)
Monday, November 07, 2022
5:30 PM - 7:00 PM
As part of our month-long “PEN-demonium!” series to promote and celebrate writing in the Estes Valley, we’re thrilled to bring you author and Library staff member Deborah Bouziden, who will cover the basics of getting published in the traditional marketplace. We will be discussing not only how to catch an editor's attention, but also the do's and don'ts of approaching one. We'll cover marketing (which is different from publicity), elevator pitches that you will want to use in your query letters, and why, when, and how-to write them. While this program is designed to benefit writers and aspiring writers, all are welcome to join!
We’ll leave plenty of time for Q&A, and you may submit questions in advance of the talk here.
About Deborah Bouziden
Deborah Bouziden is a freelance writer, speaker, teacher, certified Journal Technique Instructor, and creative coach. Her love affair with words began at the age of six when she learned to read. Her favorite book was “The Call of the Wild” by Jack London. It was the first book she owned, given to her as a Christmas present from her grandmother. It sits on her bookshelf, and she loves it as much now as she did then.
Bouziden began writing and publishing magazine articles in 1985. Since then, she has published hundreds of articles, contributed short stories to numerous anthologies, and released seventeen books. In 1995, with a team of eight other writers, Bouziden worked with Oklahoma’s former First Lady, Cathy Keating, on the New York Times Bestseller “In Their Name,” a book about the Oklahoma City bombing. Two of her more recent books include 100 Things to Do in Fort Collins Before You Die, published in 2020, and More Than Petticoats: Remarkable Oklahoma Women, published in 2013. You can learn about all of her work at her website, deborahbouziden.com.
Bouziden has spoken and held writing workshops throughout the southwest for the Taos Institute of Art, Southwest Writers, National Association of Women Writers, Oklahoma Writers’ Federation, and others.
She has served as Secretary, Vice President, Conference Coordinator (twice), and President of the Oklahoma Writers’ Federation, a writer’s organization 600 strong and growing. She served as consultant to the Professionalism in Writing organization for two years and is CEO of Creative Ambitions, a company dedicated to helping adults and children discover their creative selves through the Arts.

Books and Authors: From Idea to Book Tour: Nonfiction Author Johanna Garton Shares Her Writing Process (In-Person)
Monday, November 14, 2022
6:00 PM - 7:30 PM
As part of our month-long “PEN-demonium!” series to promote and celebrate writing in the Estes Valley, we’re thrilled to bring you Denver-based nonfiction author Johanna Garton, who will discuss her writing process and take your questions. Johanna’s books include:
- Edge of the Map: The Mountain Life of Christine Boskoff, a 2021 Colorado Book Awards finalist, which tells the story of trailblazing mountaineer Christine Boskoff.
- Awakening East, about her family’s year-long stay in China, where her children were born.
You can find Johanna’s work in our catalog, and you may remember her from the talk she gave on Edge of the Map at the Library back in June.
While this program is designed to benefit writers and aspiring writers, all are welcome to join! Johanna’s presentation will cover:
- Determining story/book ideas
- Pitching book ideas to editors and publishers
- Non-traditional ways to publish books in 2022
- Researching, interviewing, and structuring works of nonfiction
- Writing, editing, and editing some more
- Turning a manuscript over to a publisher and what happens next
- The fun part: Marketing, publicity, book tours, social media, events, and connecting with readers
We’ll leave plenty of time for Q&A, and you may submit questions in advance of the talk here.
About Johanna Garton
Johanna Garton is a mother, proud Wisconsin girl, writer and cross country coach. Before the publication of her first book, she dabbled in nonprofit consulting, college teaching and had a brief but quickly extinguished career as a lawyer. She's moved her family to China, been charged by an elephant, run 20-plus marathons and trekked to Everest Base Camp. Among the things she's trying to do better are reading road maps, keeping the family dog out of the garbage can, and being on time for anything, anywhere. She and her husband share their home in Denver with two bright children who are much wiser than she is and the inspiration for all her storytelling.

Books and Authors: An Author’s Journey: Ed Davis Shares His Writing Process and Wisdom (In-Person)
Wednesday, November 30, 2022
6:30 PM - 8:00 PM
NOTE: Ed will not be joining us in person. He'll be giving his talk via Zoom from California, but we'd like to give folks the opportunity to gather in person to watch and ask questions.
As part of our month-long “PEN-demonium!” series to promote and celebrate writing in the Estes Valley, we’re excited to bring you award-winning author and chronicler of road stories Ed Davis, who will discuss his writing journey and process, and answer your questions. Ed’s work includes:
- His latest novel, The Last Professional, which was forty years in the making. It has garnered awards in contests including the American Book Fest, the NYC Big Book Award, and the New Mexico / Arizona Book Awards.
- Road Stories, a collection of reflections from four decades of travel.
- In All Things, a fictionalized first-person narrative based on Ed’s time as a trainee at a California psychiatric hospital in the 1970’s.
- A Matter of Time, about a man with 24 hours to live, which Ed wrote over a 24-hour period.
You can find Ed's work in our catalog, and you may remember him from his visit to Estes Park in April as part of his book tour for The Last Professional.
While this program is designed to benefit and inspire writers and aspiring writers, all are welcome to join! We’ll leave plenty of time for Q&A, and you may submit questions in advance of the talk here.
About Ed Davis
Ed Davis began his writing career over forty years ago, pausing in boxcars, under street lamps, and in hobo jungles to capture the beats and rhythms of the road as he caught freight trains and vagabonded around the Pacific Northwest and Canada. As Ed illustrates in Forty Years from Boxcar to Book Launch, The Last Professional was born on the rails. His short stories have appeared in numerous literary journals. His novella, In All Things, and his collection of travel pieces, Road Stories, have both been Amazon Top Ten bestsellers. Ed’s death row thriller, A Matter of Time, was written in real time, twenty-four hours, as the last day of the hero’s life unfolds. His work has appeared in Gris-Gris, New English Review, and The Penman Review among others. Ed and his wife Jan live in Northern California, not far from Jack London’s Beauty Ranch.
About the program
Ed will be giving his talk via Zoom from California. Register for this event if you'd like to gather with others at the Library to watch and ask questions. You can also find the Zoom event on our calendar.
