This free class is open to everyone regardless of your knowledge of music.

To accommodate everyone in this popular weekly class we offer both a morning and an afternoon class. When you register you agree to attend the full morning series or the full afternoon series. The morning class is from 10am-noon and the afternoon class is from 1-3pm.

The Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953) is one of the major composers of the 20th century. Prokofiev was among the most prolific and original composers of the first half of the 20th century. His music is always tuneful, but also flavored with interesting and unexpected harmonies.

The class will focus on his life as a Soviet artist and introduce his music though video recordings of his orchestral, ballet, and piano music. No musical training is necessary, only the desire to learn about and enjoy the finest classical music.

For the 15th season, the Class on Classical Music is offered this winter on the music of Sergei Prokofiev. Previous classes, which began in 2008, have been on the music of Beethoven, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky, Shostakovich, Schubert, Bach, Schumann, Mendelssohn, Dvorak, Debussy, Ravel, Haydn, Mozart, and Mahler.

Derald DeYoung, the teacher, is Professor of Music Emeritus from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
